The Big Power of Small Talk: Building Rapport in your Conversations ☕🤝

In many cultures, jumping straight into business is considered rude. Small talk is the «social glue» that builds trust. Whether you’re waiting for a Zoom meeting to start or grabbing a coffee at a coworking space,  this week, at The London Eye – English Consultant, we’ll show you that knowing how to «break the ice» is a superpower.

1. The «Safe» Topics

While the «weather» is a classic, current small talk often revolves around lifestyle and technology. Here are the three most common «openers»:

  • The Weekend/Free Time: «Did you get up to anything exciting over the weekend?»
  • The «Vibe» of the Location: «How’s the weather in [City] today? I heard it was raining!»
  • Current Trends: «Have you tried that new AI productivity tool everyone is talking about?»

2. The «Question-Follow-up» Technique

The secret to keeping a conversation going isn’t being interesting—it’s being interested. Use the «Question-Follow-up» method to avoid «dead-ends.»

Instead of…Try this (The Follow-up)Why it works
«How are you?»«How has your week been so farFocuses on the recent past, giving them more to talk about.
«Do you like your job?»«What’s the most challenging part of your current project?»Moves from a Yes/No question to a descriptive one.
«Where do you live?»«What’s the best thing about living in [City]?»Invites them to share a recommendation or an opinion.

3. Language Focus: Question Tags

In English, we use Question Tags to turn a statement into a conversation starter. It’s a very «native» way to invite someone to agree with you.

  • «It’s been a busy morning, hasn’t it
  • «You’re working from the home office today, aren’t you
  • «The Opening Ceremony was incredible, wasn’t it

Rule of Thumb: If the sentence is positive, the tag is negative. If the sentence is negative, the tag is positive.

4. Professional «Pivot» Phrases

Small talk shouldn’t last forever. You need to know how to move gracefully from «the weather» to «the work.» Use these Pivot Phrases:

  • The Smooth Transition: «Anyway, speaking of [Topic], I wanted to ask you about…»
  • The Time-Check: «I don’t want to take up too much of your time, so shall we dive into the agenda?»
  • The «By the Way»: «That reminds me, before we get started, I meant to tell you…»

5. Etiquette: «Digital Small Talk»

When you are on a video call, the first 2-3 minutes are usually «dead air.» Don’t just sit in silence!

  • Compliment the background: «I love that bookshelf behind you. Have you read all of those?»
  • Comment on the tech: «Your audio is crystal clear! What microphone are you using?»
  • The «Coffee» Opener: «I’m on my third coffee today—how about you?»

Your Action Step for this week: Imagine you are in a virtual «waiting room» for a meeting with a colleague from London. Write one small talk question you would ask them to break the ice!

Example: «I see you’re in the office today, Maria! Is it a full house or is it quiet there?»
